7 Benefits of Using Video for Health and Safety Training

28th April 2021

Health and safety videos are quickly becoming the norm for delivering health and safety training today. Due to the pandemic, many businesses have now moved online with most people working remotely, which means that video might be the only option to deliver health and safety training to staff. However, this may not be a terrible thing as there are many benefits to having health and safety training delivered solely by video, in this blog we will discuss a few of them.

1.Video helps with memory

Studies have shown that video improves people’s ability to remember concepts and details. Viewers retain 95% of a message when they watch it in a video compared to 10% when reading it and 10% when they hear it. It is far easier for people to understand and absorb information by watching it. With video, you can explain and demonstrate procedures with visuals to help employees learn by example.

2.Video can be rewatched

The great thing about video is that it can be rewatched. Specific parts in the video can be paused and replayed by an employee, helping further with the retention of information. With physical training, you run the risk of employees missing a training session but with video they can watch it another day. Employees can access training when it is coinvent for them and follow it at their own pace.

3.Easier for staff to understand

A video is a more inclusive way of delivering a message. They can be easily translated, breaking down language barriers. They can be easier to understand for those who may have difficulty reading health and safety manuals. People also have different learning styles and video covers both visual and auditory learners.

4.Video can be viewed anywhere

Due to the pandemic, a lot of people now work remotely meaning that traditional in-person health and safety demonstrations at the workplace or off-site aren’t possible anymore. Watching a video also puts people at less risk of catching COVID-19 as people aren’t having to come into physical contact with others, a health and safety video reduces risk in and of itself. Online videos can be accessed anywhere, at any time, and on any device.

5.Video Saves money and time

Videos are easy and cost-effective to produce. Video removes the cost of having to pay a health and safety officer to train your staff. In the long run, proper health and safety training can reduce costs for your business. Insurance increases, legal expenses, replacing staff, additional training, loss of time, investigations, fines, and damages caused by an accident all cost your business money.

6.Consistent messaging

Using video reduces human error, you know that everyone has received the same message and there is nothing lost in translation. Whether your refreshing current staff’s knowledge or inducting new staff you know that by using video everyone is getting exactly the same message and training.

7.Track and analyse training

With video, you can easily track who has watched it. As an employer, this can give you peace of mind that everyone has received the correct training. If you ever do have a health and safety investigation it is easily proved that the right health and safety training was received, taking liability away from you.
